Hubdoc was acquired by Xero in 2018. Since then, Xero has kept it running but has progressively reduced its feature set, most notably removing line-item extraction. If you relied on Hubdoc for full invoice data capture, the best replacements are AirDoc AI (if invoices arrive by email) or Dext (if you need broad document capture from multiple sources).

What happened to Hubdoc?

Hubdoc was originally a standalone document collection and data extraction tool. After Xero acquired it, Hubdoc became bundled with paid Xero subscriptions (Business plan and above) at no extra cost.

The tradeoff: Xero stopped developing Hubdoc as a standalone product. The feature that most impacted users was the removal of line-item extraction. Hubdoc now extracts header-level data only (supplier name, date, total, GST) and does not break invoices into individual line items.

For bookkeepers and businesses that need line-item detail posted to Xero, Hubdoc no longer meets the requirement.

What are the best Hubdoc replacements for Xero?

AirDoc AI: best if your invoices arrive by email

AirDoc AI monitors your Gmail or Microsoft 365 inbox directly. When an invoice arrives, AirDoc reads it, extracts full line-item data (not just totals), and posts a draft bill to Xero with the original document attached. No forwarding, no upload, no manual step.

Pricing starts at free (500 emails/month) with paid plans from A$49/month. Unlike Hubdoc, line-item extraction is included at all plan levels.

Dext: best for multi-source capture

Dext (previously Receipt Bank) supports document submission via email forwarding, mobile app photo, and direct upload. It has strong Xero integration and extracts line-item data. The pricing model charges per client or per document, which can get expensive for bookkeeping practices with many clients.

Datamolino: best for high-accuracy line-item extraction

Datamolino focuses specifically on line-item data extraction for accounting purposes. It integrates with Xero and is used primarily by bookkeeping practices that need high-accuracy bill coding. Less automation than AirDoc, but strong on accuracy for complex invoices.

Should you stay on Hubdoc?

If you only need basic document storage and total-level extraction for a small number of invoices, Hubdoc still works and is included in your Xero subscription, so there is no cost to using it.

If you need line-item extraction, inbox automation (no forwarding step), or you are processing higher volumes, you will need to move to a paid tool. AirDoc AI has the lowest entry cost and is the only option that monitors your inbox without any submission step.
